This is the third book in the Elder Races series and another excellent one. It took me a little while to get into as it was difficult to associate the bad ass mean Queen Vampire from the earlier book with the woman we see here, ditto for Rune. Having said that, I soon got caught up in the intriguing (but at times confusing) storyline and found it extremely difficult to put down. I only realised what time it was when the kids asked what time dinner was – oops should have been half an hour ago!
Carling is so different from how she is perceived in previous books but she still has her bad ass moments. Finding about her extremely long life was interesting and the plot kept me wondering what we would find out next. Rune is a typical alpha male, prone to frequent bouts of growling and can be very masterful, but also very tender when needed. His declaration of love when it came was awesome but has too many swear words to quote here! The sex was, as always, wild and hot.
Thea Harrison manages to bring her world to life so well, the imagery is great and I am easily able to lose myself in her writing as evidenced by my poor starving children (well 15 and 17 year olds).
This book was very focused on Carling and Rune with very little input from characters from previous books. This worked because there was so much we had to learn about Carling and how deep her connection to Rune actually was. We were introduced to a couple of new characters and from the little interaction they had, I suspect they will be getting their HEA in the not too distant future.
I did find some elements of the plot a tad confusing at times, but overall this was a great book and was intriguing, sexy, romantic and hot. Roll on the next book in this series, I’m very much looking forward to reading it.
